QOF

page added 13 January 2014 (QOF = Quality and Outcomes Framework)

Note:

• People over 17 only

• Data checked 13 January 2014 (unless noted all data is from 2012-2013 and published in late 2013)

UK combined QOF (people with diabetes over the age of 17)

England................2,703,044

NI...............................79,072

Scotland...................252,599

Wales...................... 173,299

Total ................. .. 3,208,014

Remember that a figure of around 850,000 (corresponding to those people who undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes) are usually added on to this figure, taking it to an estimated 4m people with diabetes in the UK.

However the GP Contract website gives a figure of 3,196,045 (QOF database 2013 Diabetes mellitus) and in the table below only the figures in green match what I've found for the nations - no idea why.

Data for DM 32

The practice can produce a register of all patients aged 17 years and over with diabetes mellitus, which specifies the type of diabetes where a diagnosis has been confirmed

England prevalence 2013

There are 2,703,044 people over age 17 with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes in England - a prevalence of 6%

How I found that figure:

Website for 2012-2013 data (published October 2013): http://www.hscic.gov.uk/catalogue/PUB12262

Look for Quality and Outcomes Framework - 2012-13: England level [.zip] which generates a folder called 'National'

Find the 'Prevalence' folder within 'National' and the file in that is qof-12-13-data-tab-eng-prev.xlsx, Cell C39 gives info for diabetes in people over age 17, in England.

England prevalence 2012

There were 2,566,436 people over age 17 with diabetes in England in 2012, a prevalence of 5.8%.

That figure lives on Diabetes UK's 2012 prevalence page http://www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us/What-we-say/Statistics/Diabetes-prevalence-2012/ and came from QOF England data, and can be re-found using the method below.

Website for 2011-2012 data (published 2012): http://www.hscic.gov.uk/catalogue/PUB08661

Find on that page Quality and Outcomes Framework - 2011-12, England level: Prevalence data tables [.xls] (resulting file is called qof-11-12-data-tab-eng-nat-prev-xls)

In Cell B24 the figure given is 2,566,436.

Northern Ireland prevalence 2013

There are 79,072 people over the age of 17 registered with diabetes in Northern Ireland in 2012/2013 according to NI QOF figures

That figure lives in the table on page 4 (of 6) in this document: http://www.dhsspsni.gov.uk/qof_prevalence_summary_2005_to_2013-2.pdf

Although the practice must record whether the patient has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, this level of detail is not collected centrally,

therefore the register size cannot be disaggregated by type of diabetes.

Northern Ireland prevalence 2012

There were 75,837 people registered with diabetes aged over 17 in Northern Ireland in 2012/2013 according to NI QOF figures

That figure lives in the table on page 4 (of 6) in this document: http://www.dhsspsni.gov.uk/qof_prevalence_summary_2005_to_2012-2.pdf

Although the practice must record whether the patient has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, this level of detail is not collected centrally,
