20. Care, treatment, management

a) There are 2.8 million people with diabetes in the UK.

2011/2012 figures - 2.9million

b) We estimate 10 per cent have Type 1 and 90 per cent have Type 2 – this is taken from Diabetes in the UK 2010, page 5 (note we’re no longer using the figure of 2.6 million pwd on p4).

Calculations

10% = 280,000 290,000

90% = 2,520,000 2,610,000

c) All people with Type 1 diabetes use insulin.

NICE estimates up to 30% of Type 2 will require insulin*.

* Technology appraisal 53, December 2002

Calculation

30 per cent of 2,520,000 = 756,000

30 per cent of 2,610,000 = 783,000

d) All people with Type 1 (280,000, 290,000) plus 30 per cent of people with Type 2 diabetes (756,000, 783,000) = 1,036,000 (1,073,000) people using insulin

“In 2009/10 there were 5.7 million insulin items prescribed at a net ingredient cost of £299.2 million.” p4 of 36, Prescribing for Diabetes in England: 2004/5 to 2009/10

The next update on prescriptions is coming out on 24 August 2011.
