There are in Posey County several lines whose names probably all derive from the same German root name of Schmidt.
They can be found in such forms as Schmitt, Schmid, Schmitz, etc......
In this column, I am going to talk about Johann Philipp Schmidt who was born in Euberau, Germany (Prussia), in 1824. In 1847, he was married to Anna Margaretha Zimmerman, who was born in 1823 in Altheim, Germany. This information had been recorded in the family bible -- an 1855 edition in German language.
This couple left their native land about 1853, bringing with them several children. Three of them died during the trip to this country. One child was buried at sea.
The following children are recorded in the bible:
Elisabeth - born 1848 (Germany) died 1879 (USA) married Franz Swartz born 1836 (Germany) died 1880 (USA);
Ana Margaretha - born 1850 (Germany) died enroute to USA;

I have not been able to locate ship passenger/immigration records for their journey to America nor been able to find any naturalization record for Philipp. The 1900 U.S. Federal Census says Philpp immigrated in 1855 and was a naturalized citizen. If you have copies of these records or know where I could find them, please contact me, I would like to post them here.
Settled in Black Twp., Posey Co., Indiana by 1856 [reference?]
On February 18, 1858 a son, Johann Heinreck Schmidt, better known as John Henry Schmidt was born. He was the first of the family to be born in America.
1860 U.S. Federal Census: NOTE: I have not been able to find the family on the 1860 census but would expect them to be in Black Twp., Posey County, Indiana and to look something like this. I am using the American versions of their full names here.
Schmidt, John Philip, 46
-------, Anna Margaret, 47
-------, Elizabeth, 12
-------, John Henry, 2
-------, Christian Edward, [born in July1860 so may not show up if enumeration was before July 18]
Son Christian 'Edward' Schmidt was born in July 18, 1860 in Black Twp., Posey County, Indiana.
Daughter Emilie Maria Schmidt was born June 11, 1862. She died about 1862, possibly the same day she was born and was buried in an unmarked grave in the family plot at Bellefontaine Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, Indiana.
Daughter Anna Margaretha Schmidt was born November 4, 1864. She was apprently named after her 5 year old sister who died during the family's immigration to America.
1866-Daughter Elisabeth Schmidt married Franz Swartz on November 24.
Last child was born January 6, 1870 - son Johann 'Phlipp' Schmidt named after his father. His name was later spelled Phillip.[9]
1870 U.S. Federal Census: Expect the family was renting farmland in Posey Co., Indiana. Family was living in Posey County, Indiana by 1862 when daughter Emilie Maria Schmidt died and was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

[Note: Are John H. & Paulina here actually Philipp's son and daughter-in-law rather than his siblings? I have used the census spelling above for Hesse-Darmstadt. Hesse is the state where Ueberau is found. Darmstadt and Ueberau are about 20 miles apart.]
1880-On July 20, Philipp's son-in-law, Franz Swartz, widowed husband of Elisabeth Schmidt Swartz, died leaving his three daughters orphaned at the ages of 13, 11 & 8. The girls went to live with their grandparents Philipp & Anna Margaretha Schmidt.
Philipp's wife Anna Margaretha died on November 19, 1889. Probably at the family home in Black Township, Posey County, Indiana. She was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in nearby Mt. Vernon.
In 1894 Philipp bought 20 acres from W. H. Hones on November 24 for $450. "He bought 20 acres from Jas. K. Kreutzinger on April 2, 1896 for $3,300. The last acreage had a home build on it."[9]

Ferd “was in WWI but never left the states as the war ended before he was to go abroad.”
1920 U.S. Federal Census: I have not been able to locate Ferd (age 19) or Elizabeth (age 17/18). They probably married before the 1920 census. I can not find them in Indiana in either Posey or Vanderburgh County. But they may have been in Chicago and this might be them:
Chicago, Cook Co., IL, January 13/14; 103 Laflin Street, 36/49
Smith, Ferd, Head, Rent, M, W, 20, married, IN, GERM, GERM, [Turn?] Maker-[Game? fact?], wage
-----, Elizabeth, Wife, F, W, 18, married, IN, IN, IN, None
[NOTE: if this is them, they must have been married a short time before this census was enumerated. The only error is that Ferd’s parents were born in Indiana and not Germany. I can’t read his employment info.]
Spouse: Elizabeth Clara OETH
Birth: 13 Feb 1902 Mt. Vernon, Posey Co., IN
Death: 26 May 1939 Mt. Vernon, Posey Co., IN
Bur: Bellefontaine Cemtery, Mt Vernon, Posey Co., IN
Father: Charles Peter 'Ace' OETH (1871-1963)
Mother: Nancy Plumber (1881-1936)
Marr: abt. 1919/20
Married to Elizabeth Oeth, probably before Feb 1920. [1930 census says Ferd was 19 and Elizabeth was 17 when they married but they were never 19 & 17 at the same time. Elizabeth turned 18 in Feb 1920 when Ferd was still 18 -- they were both 18 from Feb 13, 1920-June 23, 1920] According to Ferd’s daughter, Elma Lee: “Ferd and Elizabeth eloped. They went on the train. She was underage and parents wouldn’t sign. Ferd was 18 so that must have been 1919-20 sometime. Dee thinks that they took the train to Chicago to be married because there were some family friends there of Elizabeth’s. However, when Dee mentioned the train I recall that there was mention of it from “way back.” However, my memory of what was told by my mother via Ferd is this: Ferd and Eliz did decide to elope and then got cold feet and thought they would return. However, because “people would talk” and she would have a reputation (because they had taken off together on the train), they did get married. Now your guess is as good as mine about where but the Chicago makes more sense.”
After 2 or 3 years of marriage, Ferd and Elizabeth still had no children. Thinking they were unable to conceive they decieded to adopt.
November 1923 Ferd & Elizabeth adopted a child who was born July 31, 1922. Filed receipt with Posey County Clerk Circuit Court on Nov. 24, 1923 - adoption of Ralph E. Barton.
9 Oct 1924 Daughter Delores Pauline Schmidt was born in Evansville.
Ferd was a carpenter [6]

1932 - Daughter Nancy 'Faye' Schmidt born in Evansville on July 31 (their son Ralph's 10th birthday).
“Ferd went to Chicago during the Depression to find work this was sometime after Nancy Faye was born in 1932. The family stayed in Evansville. Daddy said he really didn’t live with them when Faye was growing up. In 1935, the family came to visit Ferd during the Chicago World’s Fair. You have the picture of them sitting on a bench. Elizabeth asked Ferd to come back to Evansville and he didn’t go back. They perhaps did not have a formal separation but they lived separately for many years but never divorced. (Per Dee, Elizabeth had a boyfriend during that time.) My mother (Daisy) always said that Elizabeth was the love of Ferd’s life. When he talked about her he usually “teared up.” When Eliz got sick, Ferd returned to Evansville. She was hospitalized somewhere outside of town. Ferd rode his bicycle everyday to see her. When she passed, there was an insurance policy. Elizabeth wanted the children to stay with Aunt Lee. The agreement was that the insurance money would be used to build a house for Aunt Lee and the children would stay there. Ferd physically built most of the house. They all lived there. Dee had pictures of him laying the blocks for the foundation.”
The 1933 World’s Fair in Chicago and was so popular that it was extended and extra year and in 1934 Elizabath and the children traveled to Chicago to see Ferd and go to the Fair.
Elizabeth worked for Auto Assembly Line and ran her own lunch room for Swift Meat Packers in the 1930's. [6]
The Social Secruity adminatration began issuing SS cards in November 24, 1936. Ferd’s Social Security card was issued in Illinois.
