DOWELL Family Genealogy, especially in Jasper County, Illinois

George Sipes DOWELL4 [Littleberry3, Micajah2, George1]

Birth: 17 January 1817 Breckinridge Co., KY

Death: 1901 Willow Hill, Jasper Co., IL

Buried: Bethel Cemetery, Jasper Co., IL

Father: Littleberry DOWELL (1796-1873)

Mother: Rachael SIPES (~1796-~1817)

Other spouses: Barbara PHILLIPS Misc.

Notes:

George's birth is often sited as 17 Jan 1821.[2] And his mother's death is often sited as 1817.[3] Census and newspaper records that I have found so far estimate George's birth closer to 1817 [33 in 1850 = b.c.1817[4]; 42 in 1860 = b.c.1818[5]; 53 in 1870 = b.c.1817[6]; 70 in 1888 = b.c.1818[7]. If he really was born in 1821, then he was only 15 years old in 1836 when he married then 21 year old Jeanett McCoy. It seems more likely that he was born about 1817, we will have to wait and see what primary sources arise.

1836--George married Jeanette McCoy in Breckinridge County, Kentucky on March 10.

Dorcas H. DOWELL [d/o George Sipes DOWELL & Jeanette McCOY]

Born: 1848 Probaly Breckinridge Co., KY [Since her father appears to have moved from KY to IL about 1849, Dorcas was probably born in KY and most likely in Breckinridge County. The 1860 census says she was then 12 and born in KY. However, 1870 census says she was born in IL and age 22. Her date of birth is based on her daughter Alice's family bible which says that Dorcas died. 25 Feb 1881 aged 32 yrs, 6 [or 10?] mos, 15 days--if that age is correct her date of birth would be 10 Aug 1848.]
