Capt William Borland of Orange County, New York
Capt. William Borland
Born: about 1703
Died: 23 December 1779 Montgomery, Orange County, New York
Parents: Unknown
Headstone says he died “Dec. 23d 1779 Aged 76 years” -- which suggests he was born about 1703 [no age in months or days present on headstone as of 2008. Was there at one time?]
“In the LDS OPRs I found 14 William Borlands. One from Lanarkshire was christened 1704 Mar 4. ‘Our' William was born 1703 Oct 15 [gravestone]. His father may have been John Borland. No documents were found by Gordon Johnson but I don't know how hard he looked.
The ‘George and Ann' debarked from Dublin not Scotland. Apparently a number of people were on the boat who have not been mentioned in any written record or accounts. The numbers are hard to understand: the Clinton party was said to be 70 persons but 95 persons died en route. They were certainly more people on board than his party.
William (age 26) did not mary until he came to Orange County NY. His first wife was Rebecca MacNeal with whom he had three children. She died when 36. Then he married her sister Tabitha with whom he had nine children. As his widow she is listed as the first one to free [called manumission] her house slave in Orange county. She survived William by 36 years. Who says that those early people all died young!
I have seen military records showing that William was first Lieutenant then Captain of militia in Minisink and Wallkill townships.
He traveled from Ireland with a Presbyterian party. He and his progeny remained in some flavor of that church. --Keith Borland”

”It has been claimed that the William Borland who emigrated to Orange County, New York with 2 brothers John and Andrew, was born the 15th October 1703, as son of Thomas Borland and Janet Jackson. This claim has often been repeated by others and there is a danger that people might come to believe it to be true. However unless there was a mistake in the Hamilton register it is not true. William, son of Thomas, was born on the 5th March and c. the 23rd March 1704 in Hamilton. Furthermore, Thomas was not known to have had a son, Andrew.
My ancestors, William Bordland and Margaret Brown, had a son William born in 1703 in Loudoun (but not the 15th October). Their sons also included John and Andrew. These 3 can be accounted for, and were not the ones who emigrated. I am not aware of any other William Borland born in Scotland in 1703. My guess is that the William who emigrated was born in Northern Ireland – John, Andrew and William being typical Borland names there. Yes, further back in time these Borlands may well have had their origins in Hamilton.”
c.1729/1730--said to have immigrated from Ireland:
From Dublin, Ireland To NY [FamilySearch.org] Settled in Ulster/Orange Co., NY. “William Borland together with brothers John and Andrew immigrated with the Charles Clinton party from Dublin and came 1729 to Little Britain in Orange County NY...”
NOTE: [...according to] passenger list of the ship "George & Ann" (which brought Charles Clinton to Orange County in 1729) there are no passengers lised with the name 'Borland' ....There was a Garritt Cruise who brought a number of servants who are not listed by name.]
NOTE: The ‘George and Ann' debarked from Dublin not Scotland. Apparently a number of people were on the boat who have not been mentioned in any written record or accounts. The numbers are hard to understand: the Clinton party was said to be 70 persons but 95 persons died en route. They were certainly more people on board than his party. -Kieth Borland
