Birth: 1803, Peacham, Caledonia Co., VT

Death: 17 Oct 1883, Bunkerhill, Ingham Co., MI

Father: Jonathan MACUMBER / MCCOMBER

Mother: Charlotte

Marriage: 21 Apr 1825, Victor, Ontario Co., NY

William B. Dean was the fourth child born to David and Phebe Dean of Orange County, New York. He was born while his parents were apparently living in Wallkill near Phebe's family. (I would conjecture that he was named after his maternal grandfather or maternal uncle--both of whom were named William Borland; unfortunately I have yet to find any record that lists his middle name).

William's father had been a Revolutionary soldier and William himself served in the War of 1812 when he was drafted into the Army in 1813 at 20 years of age. His military records describe him as being 6 feet 2 inches tall, of light complexion, and having brown hair and blue eyes.

William's occupation is consistently listed as farmer. He married Sarah Ann McComber in Victor, Ontario Co., New York on April 21, 1825 and they had eight children.

He moved from New York in 1831 to Wayne County Michigan with his brother Luther. William was Treasurer of the Cemetery Society in Livonia in 1832.

In 1841 William moved to Bunkerhill township., Ingham County, Michigan where he arrived on January 6th accompanied by his wife, four sons and two daughters. He was the twentieth voter in Bunkerhill township at the time of his arrival.

William died in 1864 and was buried in the Fitchburg Cemetery.

(2) 1.5 Jonathan DEAN Sr.

Birth: 1 Mar 1796, Wallkill, Orange Co., NY

Death: 23 Jun 1890, Kalamo, Eaton Co., MI

Burial: Kalamo/Hillside Cemetery, Eaton Co., MI

Occupation: clothier, cloth-dresser, dyer & Farmer

Birth: 5 Jan 1800, Yonge, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada

Death: 24 Jul 1879, Kalamo, Eaton Co., MI

Father: Samuel Reid MUNRO Sr. (1756->1840)

Mother: Maria ‘Mary’ ALYEA (1779-1865)

Marriage: 4 Oct 1818, Nelson, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada

Jonathan Dean was the 5th child born to David and Phebe (Borland) Dean. He would have been about 3 years old when his family moved west to Canandaigua, New York in the Fall of 1799 where he lived for the next decade.

In New York, he was an apprentice to the Buffalo Woolen Manufacturing Company in Buffalo and served During the War of 1812 in Capt. Samples' Co.

Following the war Jonathan moved to Canada with his brother David S. Dean. In Ontario Jonathan married Elizabeth Munro. They were married in Nelson on October 4, 1818. Jonathan was a member of Masonic Union Lodge No. 24 in Dundas, Ontario and in 1825 they was living in Clarke Twp., Durham Co. in the Newcastle area of Ontario.

Jonathan moved his family back to New York in the late 1820's and was enumerated on the 1830 U.S. Federal census in Aurora, Erie County, New York

He moved to Michigan about 1836/37 with the families of McDerby and Davis, settling first in Wayne County with Jonathan's brothers, Luther, William & Gabriel.

"In June, 1837, he came west on a prospecting tour with his oldest son, Willam B. Dean, and bought 160 acres of wild land near the NE corner of Kalamo, Eaton Co., MI. Returning at once for his family, they crossed Detroit River on their way to Michigan, Jul 3, 1837; the family remained through the summer near Plymouth (were Jonathan's brothers had settled). Mr. Dean came on at once to build a shanty and make an opening in the forest, and the rest of the family arrived on Christmas day, 1837..."

(2) 1.6 Margaret Marie DEAN

Birth: 11 Jul 1798, NY

Death:

Name -- Mariah born about 1812. Margaret Marie Dean’s date of birth was recorded in the Family Bible but not her death date suggesting that she survived to adulthood.

Margaret would have been about 1 year old when David Dean moved the family to Ontario County, New York so it is very unlikely that she remained in Orange County.

Her parents were living in Canandaigua, New York from 1799 until the 1820’s. It is likely that Margaret married in/near Canandaigua around 1816-1818. I would expect Margaret’s first marriage to most likely have been a Presbyterian wedding in Ontario County between 1816-1820 when Margaret was about 18-22 years of age. She is apparently not living in her father’s house on the 1820 U.S. Federal Census as there are no females age 16-26 enumerated.

The only fact I have is her date of birth from a transcribed Bible record. All of the other dates in that Bible transcript that I have been able to verify from other sources have been correct. The rest of this Margaret's life is only a guess at this time.

Though I can't confirm that she was living in her father David Dean's house in Canandaiuga, NY in 1800 and 1810--there is a girl of her age group enumerated in each of those documents that would correspond with her so I believe it very likely that she was living in that town during that time period as a young girl.

She is apparently not living in her father’s house on the 1820 U.S. Federal Census when she was 22 years old as there are no females age 16-26 enumerated that year. If she was still living in 1820, she had apparently moved away, most likely married and living in her husband's household.

Based on her parents and siblings marriage dates and religion, I would expect Margaret Dean's first marriage to most likely have been a Presbyterian wedding in Ontario County, New York between 1816-1820 when Margaret was about 18-22 years of age.

NOTE:

As of 2010 there are several unreferenced family trees on Ancestry.com that list Margaret Marie Dean as the wife of Andrew Homiston.

Andrew Homiston was born abt. 1810 in Vermont and had a son Edward born in Rutland County, Vermont in 1837. They further state that Mrs. Margaret Homiston died in 1837.

Phebe would have turned 39 years old in 1837 and Andrew Homiston woud have been approx. 27 years old. Unless references come to light, this seems very unlikely.

Andrew Homeston would have been only 6-10 years old during the time I would expect this Margaret to have married which does not fit. It is possible that she married latter or married more than once. She would have been about 12 years older than Andrew and 39 years old when his son Edward was born.

Luther married Miss Ruth Brundage on June 8, 1824 at Hopewell, Ontario County, New York.

Luther Dean settled just East of Newburgh, next to Nankin in what is now Livonia, Wayne County, Michigan in 1831 or 1832. He bought land to be cleared for his farm, was a founder of the Newburgh Cemetery Society, a Livonia Township officer and local school patron. He bought an unfinished gristmill and worked to complete it. The mill became known as Nankin Mill. Luther served as a Deputy Sheriff and was "instrumental in arresting and breaking up a gang of horse thieves and counterfeits who infested eastern Michigan and Ohio."
