1840 Census:
James M. Berry died in Washington Twp., Daviess Co., Indiana in 1845.
"Julia A. Berry, daughter of William and Nancy Berry, was born in Mason County, Kentucky, December 11, 1811. She was married to J. M. Berry in 1832, and moved to Washington, Davies county, Ind., where her husband built the first court house of that county. She was left a widow in 1845 and she and her two children C. A. and A. J. Berry moved back to her Kentucky home. She was married to William M. Peed in 1850 and assumed the duties of step mother to ten children. How well and faithfully she performed these duties can be attested by them. William Peed and family moved to Henry county, Indiana, in 1856 and settled on Flat Rock. She was left a widow a second time, her husband dying April 15, 1879. She has since made her home with her son Alex. Berry, where she died Feb. 18, 1888. Aged 76 years 2 months and 7 days. One son, Madison Peed was the result of her last marriage. She had looked forward with bright anticipations to a visit from him ere this, but a Kind Providence has provided a meeting for them where there will be no separation. In her last moments she spoke of seeing this beloved one. The subject of this obituary was converted and joined the Baptist church under the preaching of Rev. Norris, in 1842. She remained a member of that church until 1880 when she united with the Christian church at Bethel, Indiana. In her home life she always manifested a sweet and patient disposition. She was never known to be angry, but always caring for her family with untiring care. She was very happy on her death bed. She requested that some one sing to her "O, Come Angel Band" and "Sowing the Seed," while this was being done she tried to sing with them, at the same time shouting the praises of "Him who hath loved us and died that we might live." She was ready to go, at times saying, "O, why can't I go now." So close to unselfish Christian life. There are left two sons, C. A. and A. J. Berry, fourteen grandchildren, [?] great-grandchildren - one sister and brother and six step children --John, J. L. and Frank Peed, Mrs. S. Fletcher, Mrs. Mag. Stafford and Hanna Self, who is living in Texas. May the seed sown in the hearts of these who are left bring forth much fruit to the glory of God." (New Castle Indiana Courier, Fri Mar 2, 1888)

Alex must have been just an infant when his family moved from Mason Co., Kentucky to Daviess Co., Indiana in the 1830’s. In 1845 when Alex was about 10 years old his father died and his mother moved the family back to Mason Co., KY.
In February 1850 Alex’s mother remarried and Alex apparently moved back to Daviess County (or did he remain there when his mother moved back to KY?) where he was living in the home of William Hyatt by the summer of 1850.
Alex married to Caroline Mathilda Bickley on Feb. 6, 1856 in Mason Co., KY. Also that year, Alex’s mother and step-father moved from KY to Henry Co., IN.

Son Charles M. Berry born in October 1858 (Daviess Co., IN or Mason Co., KY?).
William Hyatt, with whom Alex lived as a young boy in 1850, may have moved to Madison Co., IN by 1858/59 as his son William Jr. may have been born there at that time.

Alex contracted typhoid pneumonia in November 1896 and died on December 3.
His obituary from the ‘New Castle Indiana Democrat’, Friday December 11, 1896 reads: “Death of C. A. Berry - Charles A. Berry commonly known as "Alex," died last Thursday night after an illness of a few weeks. Mr. Berry came to this county from Kentucky a good many years ago. He was married and leaves a large family, all the children being grown. He was a great lover of fine horses and stock of all kinds and did much for this county in that line. The funeral which was held on Sunday afternoon was largely attended. Interment at South Mound.”
His Death Certificate lists his parents as William Craig & Nancy Mogle but more recent evidence shows that he was the son of James Madison Berry & Julia Ann Berry (herself the daughter of William & Nancy Berry).

George L. MILLS [s/o Edward Everett MILLS & Naomi HUFFMAN]
After her father died when she was four years old Effie was raised in Henry Co., Indiana by her Mother and older siblings. She moved to Berkeley California with her husband and three children about 1912.
"...What a great lady she was! She never had a bad word for anybody. Her concern was for others, frequently asking, what can I do? Her greeting and ready smile immediately made one welcome. Her patience was amazing. She had no antagonisms. In fact, the antagonisms that developed around her troubled her wonderful spirit, but she kept on loving and always tried to develop a better understanding. She accepted, though did not always understand the faults and foibles, and the misunderstandings, of her loved ones. She knew that love would overcome, if not immediately then sometime in the future...." [Memorial Service for Effie May Mills by Myron C. Cole, D. D., Dec. 21, 1974]
