NEWBURGH CEMETERY
An organization, later known as the Newburgh Union Cemetery Society, was formed on Nov. 23, 1832, to establish and maintain this cemetery, the first in the present city of Livonia. One grave, that of Salmon Kinglsey, a veteran of the American Revolution who died in 1827, already existed here. In the century that followed, three other Revolutionary War veterans, more than fifty Civil War veterans and other early residents were buried here in these grounds, a treasured reminder of the pioneer era.
The Newburgh Cemetery Society was organized on November 23, 1832. Among the first officers were: Luther Dean, President and William B. Dean, Treasurer, both sons of David Dean. Each lot measured 9 feet by 25 feet. In 1848 the budget was short and money for fencing unavailable. Builders of the fence, Luther Dean & Joseph Kingsley, were allowed interest on their bill of $61.25 1/2 until the debt was discharged.
Our family knows this cemetery as the final resting place of David Dean (1763-1838), Revolutionary War Patriot, and furthest back that we can trace our Dean family with certainty. Also buried here are David's sons: Gabriel Dean, David S. Dean, and Luther Dean; as well as many of David's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

By 1995, many of the tall thin headstones of Dean family members had broken and fallen over. Once they were flat on the ground they were more exposed to falling rain and more vulnerable to the effects of acidic rain and began to weather at a faster rate.
In the summer of 2012, the Livonia Historical Commission, in cooporation with the D.A.R., took on the task of restoration of David Dean's gravestone was well as some other Dean family headstones. An anonymous donation covered the repair of the adjoining headstones of Gabriel and Lydia Dean. On September 16, 2012, the Sarah Ann Cochrane Chapter, D.A.R. replaced the lost bronze plaque designating David Dean as a Revolutionary War veteran.
David's marker (photos on right) has been epoxied back together.
Son Gabriel's headstone is flat and Gabriel's wife Lydia's is leaning against the fence.
Workers told me that Gabriel's stone weighed about 500 pounds and they needed a winch and tripod to raise it back into place.

Hello Cousins,
The Sarah Ann Cochrane Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution has asked me to spread the word that they will be rededicating our ancestor David Dean's gravesite this coming September. The Newburgh Cemetery will be repairing David Dean's gravestone and the D.A.R. will be replacing its missing plaque. There will be a small ceremony at the gravesite.
The ceremony will take place on September 16, 2012 at one o'clock in the afternoon at the Newburgh Cemetery, 26000 Ann Arbor Trail, Livonia, Michigan 48152. Click here for an Invitation. They will have several short speeches made in honor of David Dean. If there is a family member planning to attend the ceremony who would like to give a short talk, please contact: Deborah Davis

I hope all is well with everyone, I have been out of touch with too many of you for too long. I have over 1250 direct descendants of David Dean in my files now (not including spouses). I would like to add much of that information and copies of photos and documents to my David Dean Project website later this year. Remember that the old geocities website is gone. Some of the information was copied by a webring but there are many links that don't work and I am unable to modify pages at this address: http://webspace.webring.com/people/wo/ohhitroy/
My new site will be at: https://sites.google.com/site/daviddeanproject/
Many of my family contacts of distant cousins are a bit out of date, so please feel free to send me updates/corrections, send this on to your more immediate family or other Dean family you correspond with or let me know if you want me to drop you from my mailing list.
Best Wishes,
Troy

May 30, 2012 I received the following email regarding David Dean's grave marker:
"The Sarah Ann Cochrane Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be rededicating David Dean's gravesite this coming September. The Newburg Cemetery will be repairing David Dean's gravestone. The DAR will be replacing its missing plaque. There will be a small ceremony at the gravesite.
I note you maintain a David Dean website as well as sponsoring him on Find-A-Grave. The DAR would like to invite any direct descendants of David Dean to the ceremony. Invitations will be sent early to these family members for whom we have addresses. Are you in contact with any direct descendants especially in the Michigan area? Would you consider posting the rededication ceremony on your website?
Thank you in advance for your consideration,

Hi Everybody,
A member of the John Sackett Chapter DAR has contacted me in regard to David Dean's headstone. Our Ancestor, David Dean, a veteran of the American Revolution, died 170 years ago this year and was buried in the Newburgh Cemetery, Livonia, Wayne County, Michigan. His headstone is broken, badly weathered and the old DAR plaque placed in 1930 is missing. They are looking to have a professional tombstone repair done (or a new stone carved?) and a new plaque placed. The costs have not been determined yet, but preserving it is very important. The John Sackett Chapter DAR has been in contact with the Sarah Ann Cochrane Chapter DAR and hope that they will assist as well. David's grave is one of 4 in the cemetery that they are working towards marking/preserving. Depending on cost estimates, they would like to have something done by this fall if possible. They would hold a dedication ceremony and would welcome any and all descendants to attend.
The D.A.R. says that if you would like to make a tax deductable donation toward this repair, they can be made by check, and would be payable to: John Sackett Chapter, DAR. All donations made to the chapter for this project will receive a letter for tax purposes, tax deductible - a bonus. Donations can and should be earmarked to go specifically toward David Dean's grave by designating such on your check and in a letter sent with your donation. Please contact Brenda H. for information regarding donations or any other questions: bhalseth@twmi.rr.com
I will post updates and further information on this page.
Your Cousin,
Troy
July 1995
David Dean's ggg-grandson, Dick Tyler, visited Newburgh cemetery in July 1995 and photographed the Dean family graves. As far as I know, Dick was the first family member to notice that David Dean's headstone was broken in at least two pieces and the bronze plaque that had been placed by the DAR in the 1930's was missing. Dick sent me copies of his photographs and I put the photos and information on my 'David Dean Project' family website and the word got out to family around the country. It seems that every few years, a descendant of David Dean, makes a trip to the Newburgh cemetery and many of them send me photos of the current condition of the graves there.
