Samuel Bottomley was born about 1808 [c.1806-1810] in the Holts/Ashton-Under-Lyne area of county Lancashire, England. He immigrated from England to the U.S. sometime before 1836 and was married at Alexandria, Campbell Co., Kentucky on May 14 of that year to Miss Sarah Shaw who appears to have been from the same area of Lancashire as Samuel.
"BOTTOMLEY, Samuel & Sarah SHAW, 14 May 1836, m by HJP, bondsman James Barker, Alexandria, Campbell Co., KY" [Marriages of Campbell, Boone and Kenton Counties, Kentucky, 1795-1850, Surnames A to D; Page 27] NOTE: FamilySearch™ Ancestral File v4.19 says Samuel married on 20 October 1842 to Sarah
Wife Sarah Shaw was born in England about 1815/16. A daughter of James Shaw [a weaver] and Sarah [maiden name unknown], she was baptized Feb. 11, 1816 at St. Michael's Church in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England.
When Sarah was about 16 years old her family (her parents, 6 siblings and herself) left England for America on the ship "Arab" which sailed from Liverpool, and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 11, 1832. The family was living in Alexandria, Kentucky by 1836.
c.1836/37 daughter Mary Bottomley was born in KY [age 14 on 1850 U.S. Federal Cenus]
c.1838 child [Child ?Willie? or ?Arimenta? Born where? KY or TN?]
c.1838/40 child [?Willie? or ?Arimenta? Born where? KY or TN?]
1840 U.S. Federal Census: [Where? KY or TN? Not found as head of household in Campbell Co. KY]
There is the possibility that sometime between 1838 and 1841 while living in Kentucky or Tennessee the family farm was raided and their house was burned by Indians and children Willie and Arimenta were taken captive. [see 1907 letter from Samuel Bottomley to James Monroe Bottomley]
March 10, 1842 daughter Eliza A. Bottomley born in Tennessee [Eliza A. age 8 on 1850 Census; Headstone Mar. 10, 1843]. Eliza A. Bottomley was born to Samuel and Sarah (Shaw) Bottomley on March 10, 1842, shortly before her father settled the family in Posey County, Indiana. It is likely that she was born in Tennessee and was a young infant when the family moved to Posey County.]
In or about 1842 Samuel Bottomley bought land in Black Twp., Posey County, Indiana. He is listed in the 1842 Indiana Land Tax Poll. It states that Samuel Bottomley (taken in Poll #1) owned 80 acres of land in Section 1, Township 7 (Black Twp.), Range 14.
Son James Monroe born at Black Twp., near Upton, Posey Co., Indiana on December 6, 1842 [James age 6 on 1850 Census; 18 on 1960 Census] James is said to have been the first of the family born in Indiana and was born nine months after his sister Eliza suggesting that when the family moved from Tennesee to Indiana in the Spring/Summer of 1842 the family was comprised of Samuel age about 34, Sarah age 27, a six year old daughter Mary, a young infant Eliza and Sarah was pregnant with James who born on Indiana that December.
In 1844 Samuel was listed on the Tax List of Posey County.
c.1845 daughter Sarah Bottomley born In Black Twp., Posey Co., IN [Sarah age 5 on 1850 Census; age 14 on 1860 census NOTE: Her age looks like 4 but listed between James 18 and Nancy 10 and 14 makes sense.]
c. 1849 daughter Nancy Jane Bottomley born In Black Twp., Posey Co., IN [Nancy age 1 on 1850 Census; age 10 on 1860 census. NOTE: Headstone says she "DIED JAN. 31, 1873 AGED 22 YEARS]

Upon the death of Samuel Bottomley and his wife Sarah Shaw Bottomley, their daughter Sarah Bottomley (born c.1845) was made Guardian of her younger siblings: Nancy Jane, William and Lydia Bottomley.

1865 Wife Sarah Bottomley died on August 23, 1865 and it appears that her husband was not living at that time so it is likely that he died in 1864.

1 February 1869 at Upton, Black Twp., Posey Co., IN [Ancestral File 4.17 & 4.19]
Wife Sarah Shaw Bottomley died August 23, 1865.
From DAB web page: “According to Posey County, Indiana Probate records, in 1865, upon the death of Sarah (Shaw) Bottomley, custody of the William, Nancy Jane, and Sarah (children) was appointed to Sarah Bottomley, apparently referring to the Sarah born in 1846.”
NOTE: It appears Samuel Bottomley predeseased his wife. So the date of his date in 1864 seems more likely than his death in 1869.
Samuel may have been buried on a farm burrying ground in Black Twp.? [see email from D.A.Bottomley 3/19/11]

"According to Jim [Cooper], he told me that he’s buried at the SE corner of Bellfontaine Cemetery Rd. and Lower New Harmony St. and that there was a farmhouse there. If true, he is likely beneath the farmland that has been plowed over. No idea how to prove it. I did just email the Indiana DNR Archaeology guy to see what he says. Perhaps there is a way to go about tracing / locating a grave." [email from D. A. Bottomley 3/19/11]

During the Civil War James served in the 25th Indiana Infantry, Company F.
James Bottomley was a Civil War Veteren having served in the 25th Regular Indiana Volunteers of the Union Army. He bought a new pair of shoes and walked to Evansville, Indiana to enlist in the US Army. He mustered August 19, 1861. His 1890 enrollment (in the federal pension plan) said he has 6 children under 16 years of age, and that he has chronic diarrhea, throat and lung trouble as a result of the war. After the war, James followed in his father's footsteps and took up farming.
According to two letters written in 1909 and 1914 to James Monroe Bottomley, from his cousin Samuel Bottomley in Rochdale, Lancashire, England, two of James' Children were stolen by Indians after they burned his house. I believe this must refer to James’ older siblings rather than his children since the Mid-late 1860’s is a little late for indian raids in Posey Co., IN.

Troy's Note regarding Indians burning house and taking children -- Is Samuel referring to James here or James' father? James was married in 1864 and the mid-late 1860's is a little late for indian raids in Posey Co., IN. It seem more likely that this occurred in the 1830's in KY or TN to James' parents Samuel and Sarah Bottomley's house and their children Willie and Arimenta who would have been siblings of James. Regardless of where it occurred, this story made the papers and we should be able to find when and where this occurred.
