Trail Report
After camping out at the Guanella Pass trailhead, we got a late start around 8 am. The trail heads downhill for about the first mile into the flatlands near Scott Gomer Creek at 11,400 ft. There is a boardwalk that winds through the thick willows in this area, though its longevity is in question at the moment. After leaving the willows, the trail continues to wind its way up Bierstadt's lower, steeper western slope. The trail eventually comes to a point on Bierstadt's northwest ridge that provides wonderful views.
It was at this point that the traffic levels on the trail became more apparent, as the trail narrowed and the snow became more of an issue. We continued southeast up to a the shoulder just southwest of Bierstadt's peak. From here we swung northeast for 0.25 miles and clambered over a boulder field to the summit.
Here, we cracked open a couple of beers and took in the views of the front range and Evans' imposing cliffs. I was thrilled at the views of Grays and Torreys and wandered around talking to various climbers while Matt dozed for a while. We debated trekking across the Sawtooth to Evans, but decided against it and headed back down about an hour after reaching the summit.
You'll note that this trail report is quite scant in details about the actual trail. This is because the route up to Bierstadt is very straight forward, short, and uneventful. If you desire more details, please check out any of the resources here.
