Saxon Video Supplements

In addition to my Classical Conversations information, I have also used this website to put together supplemental videos for Saxon Math for levels 5/4, 6/5, and 7/6. If you are interested in Algebra 1/2 or Algebra 1, check out Matt Wilkinson on You Tube.

You will be able to find all the links to the video supplements on the left hand menu. I have put these videos on my page in case others might find them beneficial. The only thing that I ask is that if you want to share with friends, please do but please send them the link to my page and do not copy and paste my website into your own website. :)

The reason why I have embarked on this journey is because I found that my student benefits from watching the lesson or supplement on the computer in addition to reading the lesson text. Having short video supplements allows my student to continue to be independent in his math learning and frees up my time from having to study and learn the material myself (been a long time!) and then presenting it to him. Of course, his father still spends a lot of time with him on harder lessons. :)

Originally I tried to avoid You Tube altogether but I have found some great videos that walk through each lesson for both Saxon 6/5 and Saxon 7/6. I use Google Chrome and have added the extensions - Ad Block and Hide You Tube Comments.

Info about the Video supplements I use

Saxon Lessons - The Saxon videos below are found on You Tube and they teach the lesson from the book. I feel comfortable leaving my student to these videos as independent learning knowing that they are following the book.

    • Jean Gatch - Saxon 6/5 - A teacher at a Catholic school - She has put together a video for each lesson in Saxon 6/5 (called Saxon Intermediate 5 on her videos) using a virtual whiteboard and you can see her on the video in the corner. Her videos are mostly in the 6 minute to 8 minute range. I have listed her videos on their own page.

    • Matt Wilkinson - Saxon 7/6 - He goes through each lesson in Saxon 7/6 using a virtual whiteboard and will add a little bit of his own commentary while explaining a concept. I could open my Saxon book and follow along with him using the book.

    • Others - There are a couple of others that I have listed that don't have their own page but have lessons here and there. If the video title on my page says "Lesson 86" then that means they are covering the actual lesson and not just the concept.

    • DIVE - There are several demo lessons of DIVE which is a program you can purchase. I have listed these example lessons as I have found them.

Concepts - For the main part, I have used two people to supplement concepts - Virtual Nerd and Khan Academy. Most everyone has heard of and has used Khan but I actually prefer Virtual Nerd for a lot of the videos because you can see the person writing on the whiteboard and the presentation to me is just easier to follow. Sometimes I can find Virtual Nerd videos on concepts not covered by Khan Academy. Doing a match up on concepts is very tricky. I tried my best to find concepts that fit with the lesson but sometimes the videos will be review and sometimes the videos will go beyond what the student is learning in the text. I frequently will watch the video with my student and will either explain that it is review or explain that it went beyond the lesson and is just an example of how he will use the information in the future.

There are video supplements that you can purchase to supplement your Saxon program. I have not used these but I have heard great things about them.

DIVE - The advantage of DIVE in my opinion is that in addition to reviewing the lesson, it also has example problems that are not in the book. DIVE is an independent company from Saxon and should not be confused with Saxon Teacher. Cost is about $50.00 new. Review - http://cathyduffyreviews.com/math-supplements/DIVE-Into-Math.htm There are several example demos of lessons on You Tube.

Saxon Teacher - This CD ROM is produced by Saxon and walks through each lesson. And you can find an excellent review - http://cathyduffyreviews.com/math-supplements/saxon-teacher.htm Cost is about $85.00 new.
