CC Connected - Old Files!

These are from the OLD CC Connected. For many users, you can still access them using the links below. First, open a new tab and log onto to CC Connected. Then come back here and click on the link. I use Chrome and it recognizes that I am logged in on the other tab and immediately downloads the file.

At the end, there are files that relate to the songs that are now Cycle specific. Cycle 1 - the students will learn and master Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Cycle 2 is Mary had a Little Lamb. Cycle 3 is Yankee Doodle.

Facebook advice

1) My favorite advice: teach them to put it in "lap position" (across their lap) and "chin position" (resting on their chin while you check fingers bc they can't blow in it if it's on their chin). Also, put a piece of washi tape or a bandaid on everyone's left hand (including yours) so they know which hand is which and put color dots (garage sale stickers, different colors of washi tape, etc.) on everyone's tin whistle so they can differentiate between the holes.

2) Unsolicited advice from a music teacher, as you prepare for tin whistle: Please be very careful about using tin whistle files on CC Connected, or really from any other source. Some very well-intentioned parents and tutors have posted files that will not work, have inaccurate information in them, or are just simply confusing. Our tin whistles are in the Key of D, which means that we can only play songs that are written in the Key of D major (or B minor.) There are 12 major keys and 12 minor keys, so that means there is a lot of music out there that will not work on your Key of D tin whistle. In general, if a song is in D major, it will have two sharps in the key signature, and the last note of the song will be D. (And in general, if a song is in B minor, it will have two sharps in the key signature, and the last note will be B.) You may also want to avoid complicated rhythms. The Foundations guide only covers whole, dotted half, half, quarter, & eighth notes, and whole, half, quarter & eighth rests. If you choose more complicated rhythms than these, you will have to teach them, and you may have difficulty keeping everyone together. If you are in doubt, stick to the guide, or ask a music professional for assistance. I hope I haven't offended anyone with this post; just trying to keep non-musicians from inadvertently choosing things that may cause a lot of confusion. Happy planning~

3) 1. Circle up your chairs away from tables so you are close together and (for younger kids) can reach out and help guide every hand of the kids. This also helps keep kids from blowing hard on their tin whistles because you are so close.

2. . Give them a full ten seconds (count it out with your fingers to gut it out at the beginning and end of each lesson. Gives them something to look forward to.

3. Thirty minutes of tin whistle does not necessarily equal thirty minutes of playing. You can learn the notes, places on the staff, rests, parts of a tin whistle -- all without blowing. For younger ages, only pick up the tin whistle the last 10-15 minutes. Also, never forget the importance of showing kids what they can aspire to -- either by demonstrating yourself (best) or a sound clip.

4) ABC - Using Math Manipulative blocks to practice finger placement instead of actual tin whistle

5) Don't even bring the whistles out of the backpacks until you are absolutely ready. You can do all your introduction without the class holding a whistle. I then clearly tell them my expectations and use Tin Whistle Jail. Any toots that are not when we are playing results in the whistle being put in jail. Works well if you are consistent.

6) About color coding the fingers on tin whistle - I just saw this from the CC AA team...well. I just got the automated email response: "You are correct that placing colored stickers on the holes, while it sounds like a great idea, would possibly make students rely on colors rather than remembering the notes to play. So I would advise tutors to steer clear of using those.

The white hole reinforcement stickers for ABCers is a great idea to make the holes slightly smaller for those little fingers! Another idea is to have a parent sit with each child (if there are enough parents in the room!) and sit directly behind them to help with finger location." Blessings, Foundations AA Team
