This emblem was designed by an ethnic Tibetan Chinese designer. The Potala Palace is a typical symbolic Tibetan building. Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo ordered to build this palace to greet his bride Princess Wen Cheng of the Tang Dynasty of China. The palace has two parts: White Palace and Red Palace. The palace was built on the side of Marpo Ri ('Red Mountain') in the center of Lhasa Valley. Thirteen stories of buildings -- containing over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and about 200,000 statues -- soar 117 metres (384 ft) on top of Marpo Ri, rising more than 300 m (about 1,000 ft) in total above the valley floor. Potala Palace is famous for its grand buildings, complicated constructions, devotional atmosphere and splendid artworks.
Surrounding the Potala Palace is a Khata (哈达 Hada), which is a traditional ceremonial scarf used in Tibet. It symbolizes goodwill, auspiciousness and compassion. It is usually made of silk. Tibetan khatas are usually white symbolising the pure heart of the giver.
