Claire and Jamie Fraser try to make a home for themselves in colonial America. As the two build their lives together in the rough and dangerous back country of North Carolina, they must negotiate a tenuous loyalty to the current British ruling class, despite Claire’s knowledge of the American Revolution to come. Along the way, the Frasers cross paths with notorious pirate and smuggler Stephen Bonnet in a fateful meeting that will come back to haunt the Fraser family many times.

Meanwhile, in the 20th century, things are complicated between Brianna Randall, Claire and Jamie’s daughter, and Roger Wakefield, the historian who helped Claire search for Jamie in the past. But when Roger and Brianna search for proof that Brianna’s parents reunited in the 18th century, a shocking discovery makes both of them consider following in Claire’s footsteps.

In the British colony of North Carolina, Claire and Jamie seek to return to Scotland with Fergus, Marsali, and Ian and the dog he adopted. Marsali is Laoghaire McKenzie daughter but doesn't share her nasty traits. They visit the plantation of Jamie's Aunt Jocasta Cameron, where they see conditions of enslaved African Americans. Claire and Jamie decide not to leave, and claim land that they name Fraser's Ridge, which is already inhabited by Cherokee. Jamie reunites with Murtagh, now a blacksmith and leader of the Regulator movement. Lord John visits with young Willy, who doesn't know Jamie is his father.

In the 1970s, Brianna rejects Roger's marriage proposal. After learning her parents will die in a fire, Brianna travels through the stones. Roger follows her. They have a happy reunion in Wilmington, North Carolina and enter into a handfast marriage. Later, Bonnet rapes Brianna. She discovers she is pregnant but who is the father - Roger or Bonnet? Roger goes to Fraser's Ridge where Jamie wrongly assumes that he is the rapist, and beats him. Young Ian sells Roger to the Mohawk. Discovering their mistake, they set off to rescue Roger, and Ian trades his freedom for Roger's. After Roger is free and grapples with the idea that Brianna's child may not be his, he and Brianna are reunited at Jocasta's plantation. Jamie receives instructions from Governor Tryon to kill Murtagh, who is a fugitive.
