Season 2 begins as Claire and Jamie arrive in France, hell-bent on infiltrating the Jacobite rebellion led by Prince Charles Stuart, and stopping the battle of Culloden. Claire and Jamie try to thwart the Jacobites by subverting the funds that King Louis XV of France is likely to provide. Jamie becomes the confidante of Charles Stuart, but the Frasers fail to prevent the risings.

With the help of his cousin Jared, a local wine merchant, Jamie and Claire are thrown into the lavish world of French society, where intrigue and parties are abundant, but political gain proves far less fruitful. Claire has brief sex with Louis XV of France to free Jamie from prison for dulling with Jack Randall. Altering the course of history presents challenges that begin to weigh on the very fabric of their relationship.

Claire and Jamie's adopted servant boy named Fergus who plays a fairly important role thanks to his small stature and skills at sneaking around. Randall reappears in Paris, but Claire makes Jamie swear to keep him alive until Frank's descent is assured. She achieves this by convincing Randall to marry Mary Hawkins. Unbeknownst to Claire, Mary is pregnant by Black Jack Randall's brother Alexander who dies of consumption. Jack Randall and Mary don't have a child so Frank is the descendant of Jack's brother. However, armed with the knowledge of what lies ahead, Claire and Jamie must race to prevent a doomed Highland uprising, and the extinction of Scottish life as they know it. In Paris, Claire loses her baby, and she and Jamie return to Scotland. The Jacobites win the Battle of Prestonpans. Jamie's uncle Dougal MacKinzie fights in the battle with Jamie but later the two have a falling out. Before the Battle of Culloden, Jamie convinces Claire, pregnant again, to return to the 20th century. Jamie decides to die fighting at Culloden with his clan.
