More recently I have been using stereographic projections of 360x180 degree panoramas in Hugin.
360x180 degree panoramas is a step by step guide for creating these panospheres.
My early worlds were created using polare co-rdinates in GIMP.
Import the 360 degree panorama into GIMP
Scale the image so that it is square.
Use a filter to distort the square image using polar co-ordinates, working from the bottom of the image.

Porthtowan low tide world. This panorama was taken at low tide on the Saturday after the Super Moon this month. The Spring tide meant that the whole cliff line, pretty much from St Agnes to Portreath was visible from Porthtowan beach.
