Puerto de Santiago view point

Los Gigantes cliffs form part of the Teno Massif, showing the internal structure of a basaltic shield volcano. These 550 metre high cliffs are made of thin basaltic lava flows, which dip at around 5 to 15 degrees towards the sea. They are cut by vertical dykes, which fed the lava flows and scoria cones visible in the cliffs.

Los Gigantes Beach

A landslide on 1st November 2009 killed two women. Los Gigantes beach was closed for two years during which drainage, toe protection, shotcrete and rock bolts were installed. We examine and evaluate the slope stabilization methods employed.

Examination of OBS lava flows

Lava flows in excavations for stalled development at Calle Geranio. The lava flows are between 1 and 3 metres thick, showing rubbly tops and bottoms, as well as red, weathered surfaces, where soil horizons (laterites) have begun to develop following weathering of the ferromagnesian minerals.
