Tonemapping is a method for combining the range of exposure data from one raw image or a series of bracketed images into one file. Tonemapping can increase the detail visible in high contrast scenes, for example, in shade or in the sky. I have been thoroughly enjoying producing tonemapped images using Luminance HDR. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range - in other words, a photographic file that contains a range of light intensity information beyond what you can see in one go with your screen. Tonemapping takes the range of intensity data and, using rules, makes that information visible in a Low Dynamic Range (LDR) photograph. Details of the rules that I have used in the following photographs can be found in my description of the photographs in Flickr. Click on the photograph to be taken to Flickr.
