Grading System:
Assignments are graded for content, style, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and mechanics. Each final draft is given a standard based grade on a 1-4 scale. Students will practice timed writing in class to prepare for Benchmark tests. Benchmark assessments are narrative (first trimester), persuasive (second trimester), and informational (third trimester)
Reading selections from their textbook are read in class. Homework from their practice book or textbook is often assigned. Homework assignments are valuable in preparing for tests and quizzes. Typically, assessments are given on a bimonthly basis.
Home reading is a vital part of improving a student’s reading comprehension and vocabulary. Students may choose their own books, however books should be at their reading level. Newbery and Newbery Honor books, classics, and award-winning books are recommended, as well as nonfiction. Reading logs are turned in at the end of each month to the homeroom teacher and graded. Parent signatures are required on a daily basis, and are necessary for the log to be considered complete.
Math:
Homework is assigned on a daily basis and corrected in class. It is very important that students are fluent with their multiplication and division facts 1-12 in order to master new concepts in 5th grade. Tests are given after the completion of each chapter. Students will also take a trimester benchmark to assess their retention of skills.
Homework can be assigned two to three times per week. In addition, long-term projects will be assigned. Students will be given adequate time to research, and produce assignments. Projects will be broken up into smaller assignments with due dates, so students can pace themselves appropriately.
