HOMEWORK PLANNER
Each student will need a homework calendar, and is expected to use it every day. Planners can be purchased at school or can be provided by the student.
EVERYDAY, students are required to copy homework exactly as it is written on the board NEATLY. This is a way for your child to keep themselves accountable
When there is no homework, students will write “NONE”
As students complete each assignment, they will check-off or star the assignments they have completed.
EVERYDAY, parents are responsible for signing their child’s homework calendar in pen. (If this is going to be a problem, please write a note, and we can come up with an alternate plan.)
PARENT ACCOUNTIBILITY
(If possible, have both parents be involved)
Please make sure you look carefully at your child’s homework calendar before signing it. Any highlights indicate missing/incomplete homework or parent signature
Ask your child to show you both their homework and homework calendar TOGETHER.
If your child knows you are monitoring them closely, it will help your child stay on top of things.
Please check for neatness and quality of work. You can tell from skimming their assignments, whether they have spent quality time on them.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact teachers through email.

TEACHER ACCOUNTABILITY
(All 5th Grade Teachers are involved)
Teacher writes assignments on the homework board EVERYDAY.
Teacher allows students time to write down assignments in the homework calendar.
Teachers will highlight in the homework calendar and/or mark on Class Dojo when assignments are missing, incomplete, or late.
HOMEWORK PHILOSOPHY
Homework should be a time when children practice and reinforce lessons taught during the school day. Parents should understand that homework encourages independence and creativity. Parents can provide helpful home atmospheres that encourage their child to do their best.
If a student has difficulty with a homework assignment, they are expected to make a sincere effort to attempt it. In addition, a parent note explaining the situation needs to be attached to the assignment. Students will receive full credit when the assignment is completed and sincere effort has been shown.
For math, students should practice using their notes to help them complete their work. They must SHOW THEIR WORK for the majority of the math questions in fifth grade.
Homework is collected and corrected as a class, and checked off in the grade book.
Students who do not complete their homework may be asked to stay in during recess and/or lunch the day of or the day after to complete the assignments. (Time to use the restroom, have their snack or lunch will be allowed.)
ABSENCES
When students are absent, it is recommended that they access the different Google Classrooms for the different subject-areas. Each Google Classroom will have daily assignments listed and links to additional resources if necessary.
We also have a fifth grade website where parents can learn more about fifth grade curriculum and find access to additional notes (active links will be added to each Google Classroom that will allow students to access this website.) Students will be able to access additional resources if necessary for class assignments. This website is:
Students will be allowed the number of days out to make up assignment(s). Books and related materials should be picked up after school. If this is not possible, it is the student’s responsibility to get the work from a responsible classmate or the teacher upon return. It is recommended to have phone numbers of 2-3 responsible classmates in case of absence. Students are required to make up missed assignments unless they are told otherwise by the teacher. If assignments are not completed, a zero will be given for the missing assignment(s).
FORMAT FOR ASSIGNMENTS
***Students have been shown and have an example of the format in which their assignments are to be completed. Assignments not completed in required format will first be warned and asked to be redone. Following several warnings, assignments will not be accepted and will receive a “0” in the grade book.
Write the heading on the top right hand corner of each paper and the assignment on the first line of the left side of the page:

DAILY HOMEWORK & CLASSWORK
Work that requires meeting due dates, but does not require a point value will receive the following symbols:
Test- Signatures
When tests are returned to students, students are required to get them signed by a parent or guardian.
This is listed as an assignment and it is part of their homework grade.
This is essential for parent communication and it will allow you to see your child’s progress in each subject area.
If you do not see any tests for signatures within a reasonable amount of time, please contact your child’s teacher.
