Questions: What are chemical reactions? What does matter do when a chemical reaction occurs?
Materials:
3 different powders (you will need to figure out what they are!!!), vinegar (vial “V”), iodine (vial “I”), 2 eye droppers (labeled), Measuring Spoon (1/4 teaspoon), Magnifiers (3), Laminated worksheet (1), Paper and pencil
Procedures:
1.) You will work as a lab table. DO NOT smell or taste any of the “Mystery Powders.”
2.) Using (¼ tsp.) measurement with spoons, place ¼ tsp. of EACH powder in the large circle on the plastic worksheet. Place powders according to their number on the sheet. (KEEP POWDERS SEPARATE).
3.) Observe EACH powder with magnifiers and write down observations on paper. (ex: color, texture…)
4.) Place another ¼ tsp. of EACH powder in the next box to the right of each circle.
5.) Using eye-dropper, put 1 to 3 drops of vinegar (vial “V”) on EACH powder. Record observation.
6.) Place another ¼ tsp. of EACH powder I the next box to the right.
7.) Using eye-dropper, put 1 to 3 drops of iodine (vial “I”) on EACH powder. **Be careful, Iodine WILL stain and is POISONOUS!! Record observation.
8.) Heat experiment done by teacher. Record observation.
