Copper Plating Experiment:
Questions:
What are chemical reactions? What are properties? What are alloys? What is copper plating?
Materials:
Vinegar (HC2H3O2), Salt (NaCl), Steel wool, Nails (4), Paper towels, Two vials, Ruler, Scissors, 16 pennies (pre – 1980), Two measuring spoons
Procedures:
1.) You will work as a lab table and set up TWO vials.
2.) Observe 16 pennies and 8 nails. What are some properties of metals you remember? What is the coating on the nail? Why is it on the nails?
3.) Using steel wool, SAND 8 nails until they are shiny. (You will want to remove the coating.)
4.) Rinse and dry nails.
5.) Using one measuring spoon, put 30mL of (HC2H3O2) in two vials.
6.) Using a different measuring spoon, put 5mL (1 spoonful) of (NaCl) in the same two vials.
7.) Add 8 pennies to each vial.
8.) Put cap on vials and shake for one minute.
9.) Take one paper towel sheet and CUT four pieces with the dimensions 2”x4”. Wrap EACH nail with a paper towel piece (8).
10.) Put four (4) wrapped nails in each vial (x2) and put cap on securely. Place vials back in lab tray.
11.) Check results in 1 to 3 days.
