70 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

3 March 1956-the Eagles beat local rivals Kettering 5-1 at the Eyrie to record their fourth successive league win, despite having to play with ten men for half the game when Johnny Crichton was injured. The Poppies' recent signing of former England centre-forward Tommy Lawton as player-manager swelled the crowd to 9,203, the best of the  season.
