Download

Download the setup program here: http://picasa.google.com/thanks.html. Run the program to begin.

Install

Read the terms of service, and click "I Agree".

The terms include requirements to provide accurate information, agree to Google's standard privacy policy at http://www.google.com/privacy.html, respect intellectual property, and have no warranty. Google acknowledges that it obtains no permanent rights to anything you upload, but it can re-use anything uploaded, as well as allow other companies to use them.

Select the destination folder, and click "Install". Installation takes a few minutes.

Uncheck the boxes for "Create Shortcut on Desktop", "Add Shortcut to Quick Launch", "Set Google as my default search engine in Internet Explorer", and "Send anonymous usage stats to Google".

Click "Finish".

Configuration

After completing installation, Picasa will start automatically.

Select "Only search My Documents, My Pictures, and the Desktop".

Click "Continue".

Picasa will begin examining the photos on your hard drive.

Picasa Photo Viewer can load file types you double-click in Windows folders.

Select the file types you'd like to use with the Photo Viewer.

Click "Finish".

Picasa's left column lists the folders containing pictures. Click a folder to see its pictures.

Picasa's main area displays thumbnails for the photos. Click the folder icon to open the Windows folder.

Open "Tools" menu, "Folder Manager".

To stop scanning a folder, such as "My Documents": select it, click "Remove from Picasa", then click "OK".

To include a folder in Picasa: select it, click "Scan Always" or "Scan Once", then click "OK".

After opening this menu and clicking "OK" or "Cancel", folders will be re-scanned.

Right-click a folder, and select "Hide Folder" to move it to the "Hidden Folders" section.

Check "Do not ask me again", and click "Don't Add Password".

Face Recognition

After importing images for the first time, Picasa will analyze photos for faces. This processing is done in the background. The current progress can be seen under the "People" list in the left column.

Under "People", select "Scanning" or "Unnamed".

Read the information, then click "Close".

Click "Add a name" below a picture, then enter their name. Or, click "X" to keep them anonymous.

Click "New Person" to include them in your Picasa database.

Edit the "Name" and "Nickname", if needed.

Optionally, enter an email address.

Click "OK".

Repeat this for all faces you wish to identify. This is great practice for remembering people's names :)

Under "People", select a name with an orange "?" icon.

For each questionable picture, click the "check" or "X" icon.

You may also drag a face from one "People" album to another, if you made a mistake.

Open "Tools", "People Manager" to modify your list of people.
