Install 7-zip

7-zip is an open source Windows utility for opening many file archive formats. It's necessary for opening .tar.gz files.

The main page for 7-zip is http://www.7-zip.org/.

Version 16.04 64-bit download link: http://www.7-zip.org/a/7z1604-x64.exe

• • Download the installer for 32-bit or 64-bit Windows.

  • Run the installer.

I accepted all of the default options.

Install 7-zip Command Line Version to MSYS

7-zip CLI is useful for MSYS scripts. If you haven't installed MSYS, skip this section.

Version 9.20 download link: http://www.7-zip.org/a/7za920.zip.

• • Download the zip file, and open (hopefully with 7zip!).

  • Extract 7za.exe to C:\dev\MinGW\msys\1.0\bin\.

Within MSYS, this directory is /usr/bin, which is automatically included in the PATH. You can test it by starting a MinGW shell, and running 7za.
