Creation Phase: Pre-Production

Treatment

    • Purpose

      • The treatment outlines the plot of the video production as well as established the time and setting. It introduces the protagonist(s) and antagonist(s). It also outlines the conclusion of the production. The treatment may also contain responsibility assignments for team members and sometimes prop lists.

    • Structure

      • The treatment is usually a few short paragraphs but depending on the complexity of the story could span several pages.

Script

    • Purpose

      • The script establishes the exact language used by each character in the production as well as outlines some character movements.

Mapping Exercise

Storyboard

    • Purpose

      • The storyboard breaks the production down into individual shots. It often documents the action, type of shoot, the setting, the audio, special effects, approximate duration, etc.

Mapping

    • Purpose

      • The mapping shows character and camera position and movement for each shoot in the production.

    • Structure

      • It is a topographical view of the set used for the production. Symbols are used to identify characters and the camera.
