Commit to quality client-centered services, advocate for equity and value diversity in its many forms
Two years of volunteering as a public computer lab monitor at the Multnomah County Library Central Branch solidified my commitment to the teaching aspect of service to library users. Each Friday I helped people from all walks of life and at different computer literacy levels use computers to fulfill an information need. Rather than perform a task for them, I will - if they prefer - teach them how to perform the task themselves so they can leave more acquainted than before with technology. I objectively approach each request for help as an opportunity to teach someone something new and hopefully improve their life with the nourishing effect of learning. This teaching aspect I advocate for fulfills a role that libraries have but don't always get to perform due to budget cuts and other constraints.
