John Hancock (1688-1775)

King John's Castle at Limerick

King John's Castle at Limerick is one of the most impressive and one of the best preserved Anglo-Norman fortresses in Ireland. It has a commanding view on Kings Island overlooking the beautiful Shannon River in the Republic of Ireland. As the name suggests, it was built by our ancestor King John between 1200 and 1210. Archeological digs have unearthed evidence of Viking settlements on King's Island prior to the conquering of the area by the Anglo-Normans in the 12th century. King John's Castle was also the site of King John's minting of coins in Ireland and an exhibit in the castle reflects that. The castle offers splendid views of Medieval Limerick and the surrounding countryside and is a major tourist attraction in Ireland.
