American Civil Wars:

A Bibliography

An Introduction

This website offers an expansive bibliography on civil warfare, crises of sovereignty, and slavery across the Americas in the mid-nineteenth century as a resource for scholars, students, and the general reading public. It is a companion to the book American Civil Wars: The United States, Latin America, Europe, and the Crisis of the 1860s, which was edited by Don H. Doyle (University of South Carolina) and was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2017.

This bibliography began as part of the conference "American Civil Wars: The Entangled Histories of the United States, Latin America, and Europe in the 1860s." This vibrant three-day conference, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, was held from March 19-21, 2014 at the University of South Carolina. It assembled leading historians from the U.S., Latin America, and Europe to reexamine the hitherto disconnected histories of the rebellions, civil wars, conquests, and emancipations that shook the Americas and Europe.

The bibliography highlights scholarship on the interconnected, transnational linkages that fueled these events, formed their trajectories, and followed into their aftermaths. This is an active bibliographic project. The administrator of the bibliography and website (Charlton Yingling, University of Louisville) welcomes suggestions on books to include, so please contact him [civil.wars.americas@gmail.com] with any works that suit the scope of this scholarly resource.
