Conference

American Civil Wars: The Crisis of the 1860s in the US, Latin America, and Europe.

March 19-21, 2014. Director: Dr. Don H. Doyle, McCausland Professor of History, University of South Carolina.

This conference, which was sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, brought together historians of the United States, Latin America, and Europe to examine the entangled histories of these regions during a decade of civil war, foreign invasion, and slave emancipation. The papers and comments addressed the fundamental research questions: How can we understand the US Civil War in its international context? How are we to comprehend the interconnected history of the Americas and the Atlantic World? What was the immediate impact and long-term significance of the multiple crises of the 1860s on the future of democracy and slavery?
