Packing List
Left column is for full back (checked on to plane). Right column is day-pack carry-on.
Main Pack (checked in at airport)
Plane: carry-on small day pack (and day hikes)
Your valuables plus emergency stuff (in case lost pack)
- enclose main pack in a secure 'net' bag
- hiking sticks
- hiking boots (well broken in)
- pair of comfortable, light weight shoes
- light weight gators (keep crud out of boots)
- 2 long sleeve & 2 short sleeve poly shirts (fast drying & don’t wrinkle too bad)
- 1 jacket: fleece or light-weight running/hiking top
- 2 pair pants (zip off bottoms). doubles as short pants).
- 1 lycra (tights). Adds essential layer.
- 3 underwear
- wind breaker top and bottom (rain proof, too)
- light stocking cap
- 2 mini-towels (~ 20"x20") of squeeze-dry material
- 4 pair hiking socks (& 2 pair thin inner socks if needed)
- candle and waterproof matches
- rubber bands
- sewing kit and duct tape!!!!!!
- spork (spoon/fork combo)
- waist pack for day-hiking
- water-bottle(s) or hydration-bag (total 3 liters).
- multi-purpose knife (with bottle opener, scissors, etc.)
- zip-lock bags (for food, dirty/wet clothes, trail mix, etc.)
- plastic shopping bag(s) (not provided in their stores)
- optional: little photo book (with 6 or 8 photos of family, hobbies, etc.). fun to show to folks along the way.
- thin clothesline/twine/string, mini-clothespins
- collapsible umbrella (sturdy to withstand winds)
- Light poncho (cover yourself & pack during storms)
- light gloves (little warmth, breathable, durable)
- money/passport-belt (then, to keep dry, place these in a sandwich bag(s) -> passport, plane ticket/info, drivers license, credit card, cash, notes (emergency fraud #’s, itinerary, address-phone#’s)
- wear primary hiking boots
- electronics: 220-110 universal plug (3 prongs). consider 3-way adapter (some rooms have one outlet) and one of us take a short extension cord.
- reading glasses and good sun glasses !!!
- Hostel Sheet (bivey bag and inner liner or sheet | REI).
- Euro & Swiss Francs & emergency Amer. bills
- camera (& extra SD disks), mp3 player (earphone)
- Possibly a pedometer, GPS, etc.
- ear plugs!!!; needle/thread & a little duct tape
- drivers license
- hood lamp (or small, light LED light)
- first aid (bandaids, tape/heel-slick, neosporum, water-proof matches, etc.), and medicine (prescriptions, vitamins, ibuprofen, etc.)
- toiletries - in sealed bag: tooth brush/paste, deodorant, razor, comb, file, etc.
- Sun Screen
- Log to record the trip (and pen/pencil, sticky notes)
- paperback(s) to read (then discard)
- travel book tear-outs and travel articles, maps, etc.
- wristwatch (?) (with alarm and lighted face)
- whistle (emergencies)
- hat (with large brim and ear/neck protection)
- bear rattle (kidding)
- Lay everything you plan on taking out on the floor (or table). Scrutinize each item and make sure it is necessary.
- If not, throw it out. Leave 25% of the pack free space.
- Pack items into multiple stuff bags. Bag for toiletries, underwear/socks, first-aid, misc Roll/stuff clothes into mesh bags.
