Route: Rasciesa Hut -> Gschnagenhardt Hutte over the Mittag Scharte (pass) back to Selva
Links to Picasa web album pictures of today. Includes video clip of typical descent from Peak or Pass.
8:50am bus from Selva down to Ortisei, then ride the cable car up to the Rasciesa hut (2093m) to begin the hike.
9:50am begin hike from Rasciesa Hut across the Rasciesa Raschötz (high alpine meadow). Rises several hundred feet, then descends down to:
- Baita Broggles Hutte (2119m)
- Met some locals who strongly suggested our next hike/climb should be to summit Piz Duleda (2900m/9514ft) via the Vallunga Langental route. No technical gear required, and super 360 panorama from atop.
- Descend down glacial valley and back up to the Gschnagenhardt Hutte which sits on top of a high plateau.
- The owner of the hut is a neighbor and good friend of Reinhold Messner (if you're not familiar with this name, check it out). The hut owners son and Reinhold's son grew up together and have climbed everything in the vicinity. I had a good visit with him today and he sketched out a route we could take up through a steep, narrow pass that leads back to Selva through the mountains.
- I told him it only took us 40 minutes to get from the Broggles Hutte to their Hutte, so he smiled and said "then it will only take you 90 minutes to ascend the 700+ meters (~2300 ft) to this pass."
- He was exactly right --- 90 minutes to ascend 2,300' to the Mittag Scharte (pass) at 2597m (8,520 ft). Steep and a real calf muscle burner.
- Then descended over 3,400 feet on our way back to Selva.
- Passed by the Regensburger Hutte (2037m) and the Juac Hutte (1905m)
Incredible mountain biking in these high valleys. Next year, Darren !!!!! You bike, I'll run/hike.
* upon arriving back at Haus Tramans, I spoke with the owner and he said he be happy to drive us up to the trailhead for tomorrows hike/climb ... Piz Duleda (9,515'). We'll then loop by the Puez Hutte and back down the Langental Valley to Selva.
