Gold egg is a small, somewhat oval shaped apple with yellow skin and a reddish blush. It is hardy to zone 3. Its flavor is sweet and tart, but fairly unremarkable. It is Ok for fresh eating. but we've never heard anyone say that it is a favorite. It works well as a cooking apple, particularly for apple sauce. These trees have not been particularly productive for us. This may be the same tree and apple as 8901, a numbered variety introduced in Fairbanks by Clair Lammers, and perhaps renamed by him.
