Alma Sweet in our orchard

Alma Sweet Aug. 18, 2019

Alma Sweet is a small apple up to 2" in diameter. It gets red blush to streaks when ripe and is a short, donut-shaped apple. It is very sweet when ripe. It has varied in quality from year to year, some years being dry and kind of woody, and other years being juicier. It is always very sweet and a little bland, without the zing of the other apples that grow here, It is great for making apple sauce as it eliminates the need to add sugar and adds body to the sauce, making it creamy without extra juice. Not a great eater in our opinion, but a lot of people really love it, especially kids. Definitely a good one to consider if you make a lot of sauce. The tree is completely hardy in our orchard and we have heard that it is blooming near Badger Gas in North Pole (where it has seen 50 below), which attests to its hardiness.  It tends to have an upright, dense habit, with thick, strong limbs. Requires heavy pruning.

We have a tree which was labeled "Renoun" which appears to be the same apple and tree, whether because it has two names or because of mislabeling we aren't sure. However, "Renown" is a completely different apple, so we're betting it was a mislabeling.
