Sunnier weather yields redder apples
This was an un-named variety from the University of Saskatchewan. In order to remember it better, we have given it the name "Full Moon". The flesh inside the apple is white and crisp, not browning as quickly as many other Alaskan apples. It is productive tree, and the apples are somewhat larger than Prairie Sun, which it resembles in shape. Like Prairie Sun, it is a yellow/green apple with a red blush. It is fairly crisp and quite juicy, a bit crisper than Prairie Sun. Has been fully hardy at our location with no winter die back (10-15 degrees warmer than Fairbanks airport). When allowed to produce to heavily it has broken branches off of trees, so thinning is required (and really, thinning is always a good idea, anyway!) . Medium sized at 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter.
Full Moon apples have very short stems. You can see in this picture how this results if fruit growing "sideways" and in very tight clusters.
