Have you ever taken a photo with your phone camera and the image didn't come out how you wanted?
Filters have long been used to enhance images, so why not us the same concept on labs?
A dull photo of some trees, a river and a hillside.
The content has not changed, but the Filtered photo is much more engaging.
In MEE we gathered up our best Lab activities to examine 'Why' those labs are good & 'What' makes students love them.
We were able to distil the reasons down to a set of abstract ideas/concepts. These ideas being general enough to take and apply to other lab activities.
We call these ideas 'Filters' for this reason. Take a dull lab, apply a Filter to it, and will improve!
At that stage the Filters concept proved to work really well so the whole MEE team pitched in and we refined the Filters list, producing this OER so we could share it with others who are interested in practical teaching!
Give it a try!
