Jet Engine Disassembly

Students take a small jet engine (Wren 80i kero) and systematically disassemble it.
This follows lectures where students are introduced to the functioning of the various engine components, but the complexity is best appreciated by seeing each part for ones self!
As they go, students identify each component and discuss its function with the teaching team, before undertaking the challenge of reassembly!
...to check whether they reassembled it correctly, they connect the assembled engine to an electric starter motor to see if it turns over.
Now that the students have a good understanding of the working components in the engine, then conduct a 'hot' test of a similar jet engine.
This serves the study of the thermodynamic principles of the gas turbine engine cycle, and to look into engine performance characteristics.
