This simple experiment used to be delivered using a real, physical test frame apparatus. Students apply loads to a beam, measure its deflection, and plot them - validating theoretical beam deflection equations.
...not very attention grabbing!
This same experiment was replicated exactly in the immersive world of VR (virtual reality). The labsheet itself required no changes, since it was a like for like replacement.
The novelty value of VR created a step-change in attention levels. What was once a rather uninspiring lab is now a memorable and effective learning experience.
Students still come into the lab to do it, to receive the necessary academic support (and shown how to work the VR)
The VR lab also allows instantly swapping of material, and much faster handling of loads, allowing students to go beyond what is possible in the physical lab and thereby learn more.
