FYGER (A Team Robotics Challenge)

FYGER stands for the "First Year Great Egg Race" and is based on an 80's BBC series of the same name!
It's an activity that has been run by the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering for their 1st year undergraduates for many years. Over the years it has taken many forms, but the key themes are always the same:
Promote teamwork and collegiality
Work with robots
Have fun in the lead up to Christmas!
FYGER typically takes place over two or three weeks, towards the end of the 1st semester and just before the Christmas vacation.
It isn't an assessed part of the course for our students, nor is it really an activity in electrical engineering, but it is one of the first opportunities that our students get to practice and develop team working skills, so we believe it's really important to their education. Many former students have drawn upon their experiences in FYGER when applying for jobs after their degree, and it's something that employers really value.
The competition element encourages our students to engage and really get invested in the activity. Prizes are always available for the winning team, and past prizes have included things such as:
Multimeters
Have a look at the lab sheet below for the most recent incarnation of the FYGER competition, which took place in Autumn 2023 and involved our LEGO Mindstorm EV3 robots:
Before this, our FYGER challenge involved our MiRo robots. Check out the video here to find out more:
