Students can use the university Find a PC to seek out where there are computers available. This shows all computer rooms, how many computers are in each room and how many are available. It also shows from what time the room has been booked for a taught session.
There are some high spec PCs available on the top floor of the Diamond in the Creative Media suites that can be used by any student The computers are not bookable.
The university policy on computer room use can be found here; https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/it-services/code-practice/guidance
The policy outlines that students remaining in a room for private study when there is a class due to take place is at the discretion of the member of staff.
Students who wish to remain in the room for their individual project work during a scheduled session are expected to:
as soon as the member of staff arrives for the taught class, make a polite request to be permitted to stay, explaining that it is for project work, and that they commit to not disturbing the class
sit at the back / sides of the room (i.e. on the periphery), be silent and not disrupt the class in any way, including entering and leaving the room during the duration of the class
leave the room immediately if the request is declined - e.g. if there was to be an examination / in-class tests, all computers would be required for the class or if the member of staff deems it unsuitable for them to stay
