Accident reporting

All accidents that occur on University premises, however small, should be reported in the first instance to the IPE or to a member of staff in the department you are based in for your project.

Similarly, all near misses or suspected hazards should be reported. This will enable steps to be taken to prevent others from having accidents.

Accidents, incidents, and near misses are reported online via the University Health & Safety website. A member of staff in the General Engineering Student Support Office, or in the department in which you reported the accident will guide you through the process.

Fire regulations

If you discover a fire:

  1. Leave the room and close the door behind you - do not lock it, the Fire Brigade need to be able to get in.

  2. Go to the nearest safe telephone and dial 4444.

  3. This will connect you with the Emergency Control Centre who will require the following information: the nature (chemical, electrical, etc.) and location (building, room number) of the fire; the number of casualties and their injuries; and whether there are any special hazards.

The Control Centre will then contact the Emergency Services and sound the Evacuation Alarm.

If you hear the evacuation alarm:

  1. Immediately leave the building by the nearest available exit.

  2. Proceed to the evacuation assembly point.

  3. For all buildings in the St George's complex, including the Sir Robert Hadfield Building (Materials Science & Engineering), Regent Court (Computer Science), Amy Johnson Building (Automatic Control & Science Engineering), and Stephenson Building (Mappin Street), the evacuation assembly point is St George's Churchyard. Please go well into the Churchyard, do not stop near the steps as this will hinder other people entering, which in turn will block Mappin Street and could impede the Fire Brigade.

  4. If you are located in one of the North Campus building (Kroto, George Porter, Nanoscience & Technology Centre, Modular Village, or Garden Street), the evacuation assembly point is: the public pay and display car park in front of the North Campus Gatehouse. Please do not congregate in front of the car park barrier as you may hinder the arrival of the fire crew.

  5. When the evacuation has been completed the alarm will be switched off. This is so that the firemen can talk to one another and is not a signal to return to the building. Do NOT try to return to the building until a member of Safety Services or a senior member of staff has told you it is safe to do so.

  6. The evacuation alarms for North Campus are tested at 11.00am every Wednesday. When the evacuation alarms are tested a short siren/bell signal will sound. If the alarm sounds for more than one minute it should be treated as a real emergency and the building should be evacuated immediately. There will be a practice evacuation in each building during Semester 1.

First Aid

In the event that you require First Aid, if you are in the Mappin Building you or a colleague should contact a member of staff in the General Engineering Student Support Office. They will be able to contact one of the First Aiders on your behalf. First Aid boxes are located in the General Engineering Students Support Office (Mappin Building).

If you require First Aid whilst you are in any other building, you should contact a member of staff. First Aid boxes are located in a number of places within each building and rooms where these boxes are located will clearly display the standard green and white First Aid sign. Each First Aid box will list the First Aiders available in each building.

Laboratory Health & Safety

You should make sure that you are familiar with the rules of conduct and safety of any laboratory before undertaking any laboratory work.

General rules that apply to all laboratories are:

  • You can only enter laboratories at times specified on the timetable or if you have written permission from a member of the academic staff

  • You are not allowed to work alone in a laboratory at any time

  • Food and drink are not permitted in laboratories at any time

  • You should not use any of the laboratory equipment without the permission of the academic or technical staff in charge of the laboratory

Out of hours working

Normal working hours for the University are generally specified as 8.00am - 6.00pm Monday to Friday. Please note that the Interdisciplinary Engineering Breakout Rooms (Mappin Building) are open 9.00am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday. Please check the working hours for the buildings you work in during your project.

Out of hours, undergraduates are not permitted access to any areas of the University except open access areas (e.g. libraries, Information Commons, The Diamond and IT centres) unless they are directly supervised by a member of academic staff qualified to work out of hours.
