Frequently Asked Questions

when will i get to select my title?

You will be sent an email towards the end of Semester 2, this will contain instructions on how to select your title.

Can I self-propose a title, or propose a title with industry?

Yes, all students can propose their own title, or a title with industry, however, this is subject to approval from the Module Leader. When we contact you towards the end of Semester 2 with information about title selection, the email will contain further instructions on how to do this. Please note that students should not start working on any title until it is confirmed by the IPE in September.

If you wish to start preparing your application now, you should consider what your project title and abstract would be and potential project supervisors.

how are project titles allocated

You will be asked via email to select your top choices of project title at the end of Semester 2 in your penultimate year. Before submitting your project choices, we would recommend that you contact the supervisor of each project you wish to choose to discuss your choice

Students will be allocated project titles in September after the resit results are published.

The allocation process considers ranked student choices, how many students can be accommodated on each project, and how many students each supervisor can supervise. It is a fair, anonymised method that optimises results to allocate the most students to their preferred project titles. Although we make every effort to do so, it may not be possible to allocate all students to one of their top choices.

How do I order project materials?

Project supervisors control the project budgets, so you should discuss your project needs with them and decide how you will order your materials. Supervisors should follow their departmental process for ordering materials.

How often am I meant to meet with my supervisor?

Students are expected to pro-actively arrange meetings with their supervisor, as necessary, to ensure that these meetings occur at least once every three weeks.

If you are having difficulty contacting your supervisor, you should contact your student support email (gen-eng-support@sheffield.ac.uk).

where can i find the project templates?

how do i reference my project?

You should reference your Interim Report and Final Report using the referencing style asked for by the department that has set your project (i.e. the supervisor that your project supervisor belongs to). In most cases this will be either Harvard or IEEE style. The Library has an excellent guide on referencing styles; https://librarydevelopment.group.shef.ac.uk/referencing.html

Any work submitted must be your own and must not include the work of any other person unless it is properly acknowledged and referenced. See this page regarding Unfair Means for further information.

How do I apply for a deadline extension?

Applications for extensions to the submission date for any assessed component of the project must be made directly to
gen-eng-support@sheffield.ac.uk. This email should contain;

Extensions will only be granted if a student cannot reasonably submit the specified assessment component within the original deadline and can provide a valid reason supported by evidence.

PLEASE NOTE: you need to request an official extension from the IPE, not your project supervisor.

What are the penalties for late submission?

Late submission will result in a deduction of 5% of the total mark awarded for that piece of work each working day after the submission date. The 5 working day deadline for late submission is absolute and any work submitted after 5 working days without a special dispensation will receive zero.
