Final year project

These web pages provide a summary of the project, including how you are assessed, what you need to hand in and when, and guidance on planning, report writing, and presentations.

Introduction to your final year project

The aim of the General Engineering Final Year Project is to develop your technical knowledge, understanding, and skills and an appreciation of the wider context of your studies. You will have the opportunity to build on your taught modules and develop and apply your knowledge and skills to a specific problem area.

You will be allocated a project and project supervisor from one of the seven contributing departments. Your project supervisor will provide overall guidance on the project. You are expected to demonstrate initiative and independence, as well as analysis, reflection, effective project management, and communication. The project is different from taught modules where the lecturer takes the lead in your learning. In the project, you are expected to take the lead, and the supervisor to provide overall guidance and help.

If you have any queries with respect to the project, discuss these with your project supervisor in the first instance and subsequently with the module leader if necessary.

Every effort is made to allocate projects as fairly as possible, however, the allocation process is complicated. It is the mark of a good engineer that they make a professional effort even when assigned work/projects that are of less interest to them individually. Many supervisors will also allow you to shape the aims and objectives of projects to your interests (within the limits of the scope of their area of expertise).

Remember that you are expected to demonstrate initiative and independence in developing the project.
