Learn to support someone struggling with their mental health through this online course created by Jack.org in partnership with Born This Way Foundation.
The Be There Certificate is a free, digital, self-paced learning experience designed to increase mental health literacy and provide youth with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to safely support anyone who may be struggling with their mental health. It provides video examples of how to hold these challenging talks with a friend.
While being there for your friends is an integral part of the relationship, it can have an emotional toll. Keep in mind the following:
Take care of yourself and get your own support from friends and/or family.
Seek additional support for yourself when needed. A few counseling sessions can be supportive in this difficult time and can help you learn how to balance your own care with your friend's care.
There are limits to the support you can provide. Sometimes being honest with yourself and your friend about this can be helpful (i.e. "I will continue to be here to support you as your friend. A counselor has professional training to help you find additional ways to cope with this trauma.")
If your friend is expressing thoughts of harming themselves or someone else, never agree to keep their secret. Take it seriously and get help immediately from a crisis resource. If they are unwilling to talk to a crisis counselor, you can call to consult.
