Sometimes it's challenging to determine what level of support a student needs when we first notice changes in their behavior that concern us. While the guide below is not a comprehensive list of behaviors and responses, it will serve as a guide.
Still uncertain about your approach? Please contact the counseling center at counselingcenter@setonhill.edu (non-urgent consultation) or 724-838-4295, opt 2 to consult (same-day needs) or you may contact the CARE Team (non-urgent needs).
About The CARE (Coordination, Assessment, Response, & Education) Team:
The CARE Team is a campus resource for students, faculty, and staff who have concerns about the health, safety, and well-being of a student.
The goals of the CARE Team are to:
Support the health, safety, and well-being of our students
Coordinate an integrated and comprehensive response with students, and families as needed, whose behavior is disruptive to themselves or the campus environment
Support student holistic success and retention
The team responds to non-emergency concerns by providing consultation to the reporting individual followed by a CARE Team discussion to determine the most appropriate level of response and course of action. The goal is to provide early intervention that supports students who may be experiencing distress or exhibiting concerning behavior before they worsen to crisis levels. Both students and the campus community benefit from University CARE Teams. The CARE Team meets on a weekly basis throughout the academic year to confidentially share information and to assess and respond to each report.
If a student is experiencing significant distress and needs immediate support, please see Crisis Resources for guidance. If the situation is an emergency, please call 911 or campus police (724) 830-4999 for on campus needs. Non-urgent needs may be referred to the CARE Team at careteam@setonhill.edu.
When referring to the CARE Team, please provide the following information:
Your relationship with the student (advisor, specific course instructor, etc.)
Please describe your concern in detail and include the following:
What is the behavior of concern?
Where/When/With whom is it occurring?
What is the context?
Provide any examples (verbatim text, emails, etc.)
Has anyone else expressed concern about this?
Have you discussed your concerns with the student (if not, is it appropriate to do so? Use the guide above to help you).
Is the student engaged in any resources already (i.e. reports connection to counseling, ODS, etc.)?
Does the student know you are referring them to CARE team (if appropriate, this helps so that they aren't blindsided by an unexpected outreach)?
Seton Hill’s CARE Team is composed of representatives from departments across the university including Academic Enrichment & Retention, Counseling, Diversity, Inclusion & International Student Services, Campus Police, Health Services and Residence & Commuter Life. This composition allows for multiple perspectives on student needs and identification of the appropriate intervention and intervening party. The team aims to consider natural connections, the student’s intersecting identities and respective needs, and determine a course of action that respects their autonomy and privacy. The team is committed to both the health and welfare of individual students as well as the safety of the broader campus community.
The Counseling Center offers training on supporting the mental health of students and colleagues. See the following page for more information: Training Opportunities
