La La Land, Los Angeles

As a result of participating in this Discovery Week course students will:

  • Gain a better understanding of all that goes into the Hollywood film-making process - studios, sound stages, recording sessions, animation studios, and the college majors that get you there.
  • Learn about the history of Asian immigration to the West Coast and LA in general including visits to Koreatown for LA Galbi, visits to museums focusing on the exploitation of Chinese labor in the 19th century, and the Japanese internment during WWII.
  • Visit important cultural and historical landmarks in Los Angeles including the Griffith Observatory (prominently featured in La La Land).


Course Description/Itinerary:

An exact Itinerary is still under development, but here are some of the things we will see/do:

  • College Visits to UCLA and USC focusing on their departments of Film and Music.
  • Hollywood tours including the Chinese theater, Star Walk, Studio tours, etc.
  • LA Philharmonic Concert at Disney Hall including tour of the architecture.
  • Visits to area museums.
  • LA Galbi in Koreatown.
  • Griffith Observatory for stargazing.
  • Hollywood Stargazing tour (Beverly Hills, Malibu, etc.).
  • Sunday to Sunday


Requirements/Considerations:

  • Must have an interest in film and/or music.
  • Must be willing to walk long distances.
