Course Description/Itinerary:

It’s the second year of the Jeju-do Biking Adventure! Those who went on this trip last year know how beautiful and breathtaking Jeju-do is, and how wonderful it is to bike and experience Jeju Island at the same time. The ‘Jeju Fantasy Bike Path’ spans around the whole island and totals to a distance of 234 km. We will be travelling on this road for all 6 days of Discovery Week, which means we will be biking an average of 40 km per day. This trail is relatively flat, so we shouldn’t have too many hills, which is good!

Although 40 km per day may not be much for regular bikers, it may be challenging for people who haven’t biked in a while, or even haven’t exercised in a while. So before you sign up, we caution you that this course does require you to have O.K. fitness and the willingness to take on mental and physical challenges. At the same time, this trip is not a race or a marathon, so for those on the other side of the spectrum who are looking for an intense boot-camp biking trip, we are sorry to tell you that this is not it. During the entirety of the trip, the whole group will stay together and maintain a pace that is acceptable for all the participants, so no one will be left behind. Therefore, we will be going at a leisurely pace, and we can take as many breaks as needed, although we do need to complete the course in time.

When we are not biking, we will be participating in a variety of cultural/sightseeing/beach+coastline activities. This is so that the whole trip isn’t just an experience of physical challenge, but also an experience of learning and interacting with the culture, history, and FOOD of Jeju Island. At Jeju, we will be staying in clean and safe places (i.e. hostel, guesthouse) so you will have a comfortable place to sleep in/chill every night. We will never be sleeping in tents.

Further activities include Cave, Island, Fields, Museum, more to add later.

Requirements/Considerations:

In order to participate in this course, students must:

  • Be familiar with biking. If you are not comfortable on a bike and/or have not been one in quite some time, do not sign up for this course. This is not a course designed for novice riders. Students who are not in the proper physical condition or do not have the skills to maintain the pace during the week, create a problem for the entire group.
  • Be capable of riding more than 40 km per day, on relatively flat terrain.
  • Own and wear appropriate equipment. The most important ones are: Helmet, comfortable/sports clothes, running shoes (or any other type you would wear while playing sports).
  • In order to make sure all participants meet the requirements above, we will be having one or two short meetings on the Han River courses prior to Discovery Week.
  • You do not need to own a bike, as there will be rental services available on Jeju Island. If you are planning to take your own bike, you will need to pack your bike in a box to take it onto the plane. More information on this will be provided later. There are additional costs for those who rent as well as those who transport bikes on the flights.
  • Sunday to Friday evening
