Even though most Big Picture students do their service thesis project their senior years, I have decided to start mine this year! My goal is to at least get all of the planning done this year and have all of my resources contacted, so if I need to continue it next year, I will be all set. My service thesis project is going to be creating an after school program to help encourage girl/girl support, and to help young girls have a healthy and fun transition into high school and life. I also want to help connect middle school girls to high school girls. Check out my evidence below!
This project has gone really well! I have had a couple of setbacks here and there (only having one girl in my first group, etc) but eventually it all came together. I've heard from multiple sources that I have made an impact in the girls' lives, which is both amazing and crazy to hear. The girl's themselves had said I helped them become more confident, and showed them the cool things about being a girl. I feel like I have grown more confident in this project as well, partly because I had to be a good role model to the girls, and eventually I started feeling more like a role model. This is going to be a legacy project as well- the things I discussed about relational aggression may be addressed in the SLAM curriculum in the future! I am waiting to hear back about that right now, but it's looking good! Overall, I'd say this project was a 10/10. Would recommend to future users.
I also surveyed the girls at the end of the group- here are their results!
(I asked them what the group helped them with, or what they got out of it)
