Dr. David Goodale

Family Background: In the early 1850s David Goodale, a physician from Vermont came to San Pablo, settled on a ranch, and engaged in farming and stock-raising. He was the first physician in the area, and his practice of medicine was limited to that of his employees and neighbors.

Goodale was also involved in the community and served as vice-president of the then newly-organized Contra Costa County Agricultural, Horticultural and Mechanical Society at Lafayette in 1859. He also served as California state senator for Contra Costa and Marin Counties in the 1870s as noted in the table above.

He married in 1872 and had three children; 2 sons, David Daniel and Robert Hilliard; and a daughter, Ella Mae. Dr. Goodale died in May 1881 in San Francisco. His son Robert, also a physician, inherited a potion of the vast estate of 165+ acres known as the Goodale Tract. This property was located near the marshlands of San Pablo Bay, to the west of where Leroy Heights is today, and on the east bordering today's Giant Road with the *Northern Railway running right through it (see map). The Goodale home bordered along San Pablo Creek.

*In 1885, the Northern Railway along the shoreline was acquired by Southern Pacific, which integrated it into its nationwide system.

Below are Reports of Decisions in Probate, rendered by Hon. James V. Coffey, Judge; Volume 2 by the California Superior Court, San Francisco. Probate Dept. for the Goodale Estate for April 1891.

The photo above describes the "Goodale house interior; couple at piano" but does not mention the names of this couple, so their identity is unknown at this time. However, it's possible that this is Robert Goodale based on other photos he's appeared in and the woman could be his sister (Holiday decorations added for effect).
