**San Pablo's First Community Christmas Celebration**

🎄 🎄 🎄 🎄 🎄 🎀  🎄 🎄 🎄 🎄 🎄

Oakland Tribune - Dec 1944

In 1944, before the city had even incorporated, the community coordinated its first Community Christmas celebration. From the participants listed in the article, one can imagine it was truly a "large-scale" event! 🎉

Reference Notes.

🏫 Market Street School, built c1897 at 21st and Market, eventually would be relocated and become Dover School. The area at 21st and Market became San Pablo's City Hall and Administration Buildings including the San Pablo PD.

🏠 El Portal Park, located at the foot of "Tank Farm Hill" and Highway 40 (San Pablo Avenue) started out as a 450-unit temporary war housing project in the 1940’s and 1950’s for defense workers employed by the old Kaiser shipyards in Richmond. It is situated on a fifty-acre parcel of land owned by the Housing Authority of San Pablo. In the summer of 1960, El Portal Park was torn down, and a portion was later converted by the Albert Lovett Corporation to build the El Portal Shopping Center in June 1960. The only reminder that war housing was once there on this site is the Vista Del Camino Housing project added in 1952.
